CAT | Self Portraits

Self Portrait Sunday has been negleted for a while but with good reason. Have have made it a priority lately to look after myself a little better. Eating balanced meals that are appropriate in portion and getting a little more exercise have been the main focus so I have not spent anytime working on self portraits. I have lost about 30 pounds to date and I think that it is really noticeable in my face. The other day we were out for a photo walk at the University of Alberta and while we were in one of the buildings there was some pretty nice window light coming in. Since I did not have a subject I turned the camera on myself, and it is a little challenging holding a DSLR in your hand while trying to take a photo of yourslef. Lets just say framing is pretty limited… Anyway after seeing the photos of myself I thought that it would be cool to dig through some old photos and find one of the chubbier me. I liked this photo because it was simple and something that I could recreate pretty easy as it was simply a test of some new Pocket Wizards with my 580 EX II flash. So here is a before and after (after about 3 months) taking better care of myself. I know the expresions are pretty lame so I also included the photos from the University with some sillier faces ;) Hope you enjoy!

After missing the last few weeks of self portraits I thought I would simplify one. It has been a tough few weeks, lots going on and I can’t seem to get caught up. I think I am back on track now after setting up a new computer and a new bed. I seems that 2 adults and 2 kids cannot all sit on the same corner of the bed. Who knew?

I was in the mood for something a little more film noir like. Shot this with camera in hand and had Angela hold the flash behind the kids toy work bench which has holes for all the tools to hang in. That is where the hot sopts are coming from, the light passing through the holes. But it looks like I could be peeking out the window of a motel into the parking lot waiting and watching while someone is pulling in.

Happy Family Day weekend everyone! In the spirit of Family Day I thought that I would post a photo from my family. Tonight we were to my grandmas for a Family Day dinner and like I have mentioned before my grandma is a photo nut like me. Her walls are filled with photographs of family, some are portraits and others are simply snapshots. Everytime I go over I love to look at all the old photographs and came accross this one. This is more a portrait of myself rather than a self portrait as I did not own a camera back then ;) This is my sister and myself all dressed up for the rodeo. What a pimp hey!

The following two shots are a little more on the creepy side. The one of the hand looks like it could be the back of a hand that has a palm print on it, at least that is the illusion I see because of the way the fingers curl.

This one is creepy to me just because of the crop and expression…

until next time…

Looking for a portrait that says Active, Adventure, Corporate, Cool all at once? Well look no further this is it. Well ok it might be plain old fashioned tacky like the tie! This is actually week number two of Self Portrait Sunday and while I was not really sure what the photo would entail I did know that I wanted to include a dilbert like tie, or at least the appearance of being windblown.

Cue mountain bike from the basement, hair gel, spray bottle, necktie, and wire!

Next up was a freestyling all business serious look
Goofy Corporate Portrait

And last but not least after all the “safe shots” were taken was some time to bust some moves and haul out the old bag o tricks. Pretty stylish eh. PS. the pie plates under the arms were achieved via the soray bottle mentioned above, honestly.

I was recently doing a self portrait every night but that was insane. There is no way that I could keep that up and do anything else so I decided to make it a weekly thing and only do one a week. Lets call it… Self Portrait Sunday. The pictures may or may not be taken on Sunday but I am going to do my best to post a self portrait every Sunday, we will see how that goes!

So for this installment I wanted to do something with a guitar and the concept of being on stage performing a concert. I hope you enjoy it.

I had too much fun shooting this set. Do you think I have a shot at being a Country Music star?

Ok so I have no clue how to sing on key or play any instruments but that has never stopped other people from making it before. All I need is a super fab image and someone to manage me and I could be great! Well at least I had fun singing even if it was out of tune and no one was listening, and I think that is good… for everyone!

See ya later

Today we went to the West Edmonton Mall waterpark. The boys were too scared to go in the “ocean” so it was just me all by my lonesome, that is why I am the only one who is wet. I wonder why they were scared, do you think it had anything to do with the way I looked? Maybe they were just embarassed to be seen out in public with their dad =)

They were both so excited to go and when we first got there and looked through the window they were bouncing with anticipation. The whole time we were in the change rooms they both kept yelling “we’re going to the waterpark…”, but once we got in the water and the horn sounded for the waves that was it. After a few splashes Owen wanted out of the “ocean” and Brandon had enough as well. We tried to get them to play in the splash park and Brandon did try a little but Owen wanted no part in it. Instead Owen preferred to alternate between the hot tub and the lounge chairs and Brandon was brave enough to tackle a few slides with me and stay in the shallow parts of the wave pool.

Not sure how soon they will want to go back but I had a pretty good time, even though we did not get to go on the tube rides which were not open… and when we asked them if they had fun they both said yes.

Of course it is still snowing, it is winter after all and we need the snow to make our igloos! I am a little tired after yet another weekend of lots of snow, if you recall last weekend we had a storm as well which you can read about here. My spirits are high, maybe not quite as high as the snow banks, but aside from the bitter cold (-30C) it is actually not that bad and its kind of funny. I am actually hoping the that snow in our backyard gets higher than our fence which is 4 feet tall. We are maybe 8 inches away but apparently it is supposed to get warm this week, around 0C. Hmm.

Anyway I wanted to get a picture of me all bundled up and excited just heading out to shovel the champange powder can’t you just see the excitement of my expression, ok well I was smiling but you can’t see it =)

After I was done shovelling our Driveway and deck I was a little gassed, wet and sweaty, notice the water dripping off my nose. But I did conquer the savage snow storm, at least this round anyway.

Once I towelled off I went to help the boys eat supper. They were watching How to Train Your Dragon, which is an awesome movie, and it was just finishing up. They both wanted to show me their Dragon faces and so I grabbed the camera. The main Dragon in the movie is named Toothless so I feel these names are fitting.

I present to you a Carrott Tooth and Goofy Tooth Dragon.

Still on the self portrait kick, not sure for how long but if you like them I can keep them coming just let me know via the comments. I will be shooting them as a personal project for a while longer anyway as a friend of mine challenged me to making a self portrait everyday for an undetermined period. I just thought I would share some of the early ones here and I will continue to post them via my Flickr account at the very least. It is very challenging to come up with an idea that can be carried out from start to finish in under 30 minutes but tonight I came up with a special agent theme with a light in a briefcase. While not incredibly original I have always wanted to make a shot like this so I can now cross it off my list.

Ok so according to the Weather Network it is -23 Celsius but with wind it feels like -30, which is about -22F. Brr. So I was looking through some old photos of a trip to Florida and came accross this surfer walking down the beach on a nice and hot +98F day, that is only a 120 degree difference in temperature a drop in the bucket.

and so the silly shots continue because apparently I am suffering from brain freeze
